External Beam Radiotherapy

External beam radiotherapy treatment is delivered using a linear accelerator that generates a source of X-radiation that is aimed at and delivered to a particular part of the body. This precise targeting allows us to deliver therapeutic doses to cancerous tissue while minimizing exposure to healthy surrounding structures.

Our linear accelerators are equipped with advanced multi-leaf collimators and image guidance systems, enabling intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and stereotactic treatments. These sophisticated techniques allow for highly conformal dose distributions that can be shaped around complex anatomical structures.

Patient Pathway

The patient pathway to radiotherapy treatment can be complex and consists of several key steps involving multiple staff groups across two departments (Oncology and Radiotherapy Physics), and relies on those staff groups working to time sensitive targets. Radiotherapy Physics is responsible for many of the key steps in the patient pathway to treatment.

Our integrated approach ensures seamless coordination between clinical teams, from initial consultation and imaging through treatment planning, quality assurance, and final treatment delivery. Each step is carefully managed to maintain the highest standards of patient care while meeting critical timelines for treatment initiation.

Innovation & Development

We are committed to continuous improvement and innovation in radiotherapy physics. Our team actively participates in research projects, evaluates new technologies, and implements cutting-edge techniques to enhance treatment outcomes. This commitment to advancement ensures that patients receive the most effective and up-to-date radiotherapy treatments available.
